Microencapsulation allows functional materials to be obtained for further use in footwear so as to attain the concept of ‘active footwear’
To this end, INESCOP has a multidisciplinary team mainly made by PhDs from different fields: chemists, biochemists, chemical engineers and biotechnologists, who bring to the industry the latest developments in material functionalisation and help the companies be at the forefront of innovation.

- Development of microcapsules with shells adapted to the requirements of the industrial process in which they are to be used

The laboratory has advanced and specific equipment for the stabilisation, dispersion and encapsulation of active substances:
- Wide range of encapsulation technologies: simple and complex coacervation, interfacial polymerisation in micro- and nanoemulsion, ionic gelation, precipitation, sol-gel, etc.
- Analysis of the morphology, size and structure of microcapsules by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
- Elementary analysis of the composition by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)
- Determination of micro-/nanoparticles size by laser diffraction (DLS)
- Equipment for studies on stability and functionality
- Pilot plant for the scaling up of microencapsulation processes by emulsion polymerisation processes
- Reactor of 60L Capacity

As a result of this research line, it is worth mentioning the filing for an international patent ‘Bone Cement Comprising Microencapsulated Antimicrobial Compounds’ in collaboration with the Comillas Pontifical University and the Gregorio Marañón Hospital. In addition, the group has been awarded the Basic Research Prize in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology 2016 from the SECOT Foundation (Spanish Society of Orthopeadic Surgery and Traumatology)
