PILOTabp

Pilot plant for environmentally friendly animal by-products industries (ENV.2013.3.3-2-603986)

logo pilotABP

PILOT-ABP project is focused on the development and demonstration of efficient and sustainable technologies to recover animal by-products

The European Meat Industry generates 18 tonnes of waste, the treatment and disposal of which currently means a complex environmental problem.

In this sense, PILOT-ABP proposes various alternatives for the recovery and valorisation of this type of waste: collagen-based adhesives; improved fertilisers that reduce pesticide use; high-value oils and fats for their incorporation into food preparations, cosmetic products for pets or retanning agents for leather. All of them obtained from animal by-products through a rendering process. Moreover, energy and biofuels from direct treatment of meat waste can be obtained.

ObjeCtivE

To provide the processing industry of animal by-products with technologies that improve the industrial process with lower energy consumption and yield better properties in the final products.

EXPECTED Results

  • Treatment of animal by-products by HTL pyrolysis to obtain biofuels. In addition, the process can be used to obtain coal and an aqueous phase that could be used as a fertiliser

  • Application of a Short Path Distillation (SPD) technology to obtain fatty acids with higher added value, aimed at food and pharmaceutical industries
  • Collagen-based biopolymers for different industrial applications such as bio-adhesives, flocculants, fertilisers, additives for leather tanning industries, etc.
