KNITSHOES3D II Process optimisation for efficient footwear production
The growing consumer interest in knitted footwear is leading manufacturing companies to increasingly adopt this production technique. During the first year of the project, agile technical development methodologies based on the digital last were defined. Now, companies require new design techniques to optimise production times imposed by linear knitting machines. In this context, INESCOP, with funding from IVACE, is researching within KNITSHOES3D II, the development of more realistic and efficient 3D design and manufacturing methodologies for knitted footwear for companies in the Valencian Region.
The companies collaborating in this project are multidisciplinary and represent a fundamental core of the knitting footwear value chain, including material suppliers, manufacturers and auxiliaries. Thanks to the progress achieved during the first year, INESCOP now has a solid knowledge base on the development of this type of footwear. With regard to the materials used, a basic characterisation has been carried out separately for different types of yarns and technical structures, which now require an integrated study of both factors that takes into account the design for efficient production.
When it comes to virtual 3D footwear, current design methodologies and visualisation systems are not specifically conceived for knitted footwear, where the entire upper is made as a single piece. Therefore, companies demand a representation system that is realistic enough to present this type of footwear in virtual catalogues or digital sales platforms.
Faced with these challenges, INESCOP is carrying out the KNITSHOES3D II project to improve knitting production systems among footwear companies in the Valencian Region.
KNITSHOES3D II OBJECTIVE
The main objective of the KNITSHOES3D II project is to increase efficiency in the manufacturing of knitted footwear by optimising technical and virtual design processes in order to make the integration of this methodology profitable within production chains.
EXPECTED RESULTS
The project aims to implement a technical design methodology for knitted footwear that supports efficient manufacturing, achieves photorealistic virtual appearance, and analyses the most suitable materials for each type of yarn structure used.
