QRAIS Automatic process to assist the in-factory quality control of footwear composition and internal structure
Safety and quality standards in footwear are becoming increasingly strict, and companies in the sector lack a system capable of assessing the internal layout of the product during the manufacturing process, beyond a visual external inspection by an operator. In this context, INESCOP, within the framework of the QRAIS project funded by IVACE, is developing a detection system for defects in the internal structure of footwear using computer vision and X-rays, which can be integrated in the production process of Valencian companies.
Customers are increasingly aware of the importance of internal footwear quality and value attributes such as durability, comfort and product safety. As such, footwear brands and manufacturers need to guarantee internal quality to meet market expectations.
Beyond the final consumer’s requirements, national and international regulations impose increasingly stringent quality standards for product safety. The QRAIS project therefore addresses the need for suitable tools and technologies that allow for thorough and efficient internal quality control of footwear.
Thanks to these technologies, companies will not only optimise their processes and remain competitive in the market, but will also take a qualitative leap by implementing digitalisation in their production systems. Businesses will have access to an internal footwear quality evaluation system that improves current manual processes using more efficient, reliable technologies that are currently unavailable in the industry.
QRAIS OBJECTIVE
The QRAIS project is focused on developing an automated process for controlling the internal quality of footwear, evaluating packed shoes in a non-destructive way. The system under development aims to identify all footwear elements and components through X-ray images automatically analysed by computer vision algorithms.
EXPECTED RESULTS
This research seeks to develop a prototype system for detecting defective components in footwear during real-time production, thus minimising the risk of defective items reaching the market. The prototype will be effectively integrated into the companies' production lines, supporting operators and enabling exhaustive control of 100% of production.
